I’m sure we all know the addictive qualities of sites like YouTube – I came across a couple that piqued my interest. The first was a revolving mini chandelier which just struck me as very unusual. I couldn’t really make out the design clearly at first so that got me putting in the effort to look in to it more closely. It certainly makes for a very interesting feature in any household.
The designer describes the actual lampshades is being propeller like that are balanced on top of the steel tip. The circular motion is generated through the updraught of hot air from the halogen lights that are used. So the whole structure must be actually quite flimsy or at least very light for there to be so much motion from the hot air convection.
There are three halogen lights, each on their own branch, each having one small revolving, see-through lampshade making the three inner shades. Then the whole of the three armed chandelier has an outer lampshade which also revolves from the combined heat of the three bulbs. So you end up with four revolving shades all constructed of a diaphanous see-through, obviously lightweight, plastic I would have imagined. Worth clicking on the video.
Halogen lights eco-friendly or not?
The designer was commenting that he needed to use halogen lights to create sufficient heat for the revolving motion. However he suspects that the halogen bulb may soon be banned for its excessive use of energy. Certainly halogen bulbs do get very hot but they also provide a reasonably efficient amount of light per unit energy since they normally run at a lower voltage and power rating then the traditional incandescent bulbs which are being phased out. They also have the advantage of being constructed of less toxic substances than CFLs, which as I recently mentioned in a recent post, use mercury within their lighting process and construction. I suspect that halogen lights will be around for some years to come.
Turbine Power in Creative Eco-Designs
I would like to see designers incorporating the use of wind power to make a self-lighting chandelier of this revolving kind. (As I thought of that, it I also brought to mind the old ‘mad’ scientists’ futile attempts to create perpetual motion machines.)
Now that sounds like a project worth investigating! Anyone up for it?

I came across another attractive children’s mini chandelier which immediately caught my eye since we are a great tea drinking family. It has a touch of the Art Deco, might one even say, chic design as well as being perfect for the nursery or playroom. I think it is the fact that it is hand-made and hand-painted which makes it stand out from the crowd. Its usability factor is good since its diameter is only about 25 inches. That means you don’t have the daunting task of finding a large space and well supported ceiling fixture if you ever need 
to re-position it, given that most people will consider it to be more for children and adults. Strangely, this store calls it an Aladdin chandelier, whereas when I first came across it, it was referred to as a tea party chandelier, a somewhat more accurate description, I would have thought than Aladdin.
The particular store I found this at, homelivingstyle.com, was also very interesting as it is a good resource for general chandeliers and particularly high range crystal chandeliers.
Quite often when you browse the larger dedicated chandelier online stores, you will be flooded with pages of products to scroll through with anything from 2000 up to 7000 examples.

That is way too many to take in at one sitting , particularly if you’re not really sure quite what you’re looking for. This online store’s particular range includes about 300 different chandelier products. Now that makes it very much easier just to browse down through the pages and select the one you like, particularly since they have a lot of examples on one page still not having to click from page to page all the time. When I mentioned high-end crystal chandeliers, this particularly stunning example is actually in excess of $35,000 and that is after an $11,000 discount!
A Popular Bronze & Crystal Design
At the other end of the scale and clocking in at just over $500 is their most popular crystal chandelier(as of today) with a bronze construction and gold coloured silk shades. this is not quite in their cheapest, nor does it look it. I think this store has a very balanced stock of chandelier lighting products altogether. Well worth taking a browse!

I came across this cute Cow Over the Moon mini chandelier for a baby’s room which I thought was worth a closer look. You can actually have the chandelier personalised to include the child’s names and date of birth, at no extra cost. Of course if you plan to have several children, you may prefer to leave the name and date off.
There are two different product designs, one with three arms (or branches, as they are sometimes called) and one with five – the one in the picture has five branches. You have various options to choose from for further customising it and they will cost more:
- If you want to add hanging crystals to it (which you can see in the picture), you actually choose between different qualities of crystal at different prices.
- You can add chandelier lamp shades to the lights.
There is some flexibility with changing the shade design to one of your preference though there may be a charge for this. For instance they give you options of having - Lampshades covered in that Tinkerbell fairy dust. Alternatively you could choose between some
- Ostrich boa which will be hand tinted. They even have
- Local artists whom they employ to produce a completely unique design pattern
In fact, if you choose to go with the hand painted chandelier shades option and make it a completely unique shade, that would be also adding more interest to it as a possible future family heirloom.
As I explored further, I noticed they have at least 10 different designs with the same customisability and here is a photo of their Safari Walk about 3- arm Chandelier. In my opinion the cow over the moon is actually the cutest.
For those who are into creating a theme around this, you can even get matching lamps and all sconces.
