A Murano Crystal Chandelier: The Final Word in Elegance and Style

Glass and Crystal Murano Chandeliers Are Truly Works of Art and at the Apex of the Italian Glass-blowing Artifacts

If you are looking to combine the quintessential Italian craftsmanship with the height of beauty in lighting accessories, you should look no further than a Murano crystal chandelier. For those in the industry, true Murano crystal and glass is synonymous with pure quality. Owning a masterpiece made by such a time-tested and time-honored process is even further enhanced when you understand its long heritage.

Murano’s Amazing Past

Murano glass has a rich history steeped in pride, tradition, and even intrigue. It is named after a small island that lies northwest of Venice, Italy. Originating in Rome, and then spreading to Venice, the craft grew, and a guild was later set up to regulate its quality, style, and production. In 1291, the Venetian government passed legislation that all glass producers move to the island of Murano. The party line was that this protected a city made of wood from the potential fire hazards associated with glass manufacturing. However, the argument can also be made that it was easier for the government to keep a watchful eye on this increasingly profitable trade. Laws were then passed that prohibited artisans from practicing their craft outside of Italy. Stiff punishments were handed down to anyone selling trade secrets or leaving the country without permission. During the middle ages, rumors flew that the government had even hired assassins to kill artisans who had left the island.

Although the conditions were somewhat oppressive, the art of Murano glass and particularly the Murano glass chandelier flourished, with artisans competing to outdo each other. The quality of the glass improved, and new techniques spread like wildfire across the small piece of land. It has, like most industries, had its share of highs and lows. However, the amazing craft has survived the rule of Napoleon and two world wars, and the island’s namesake has been in constant production from its early days all the way up to the present.

Murano’s Illustrious Present

Murano Venetian chandeliers are truly works of art. Many traditional models incorporate tubular shapes and striking — yet graceful — curves. You will also see a wide assortment of floral designs. Don’t feel locked into those styles, however. For a more contemporary look, try one of its sleek, clear-glass models. Murano chandeliers are also known, of course, not only for their design but for their beautiful colors, such striking reds, greens, and blues. As a contrast, their frosted glass, a relatively recent addition to the Murano arsenal, is refined and elegant. And, as mentioned before, the clear glass is also exquisite.

Beware of Imposters

In all the excitement of purchasing a new chandelier, sometimes people forget to do their homework. Smart shoppers know which questions to ask. Be aware that in today’s marketplace, the term “Murano” is used to describe both actual glass and styles coming from that region as well as the many competitors’ products that copy the real thing. Make sure to find out if the piece you are interested in is an original or a replica.

Simply the Best

And there you have it: a crash-course in Murano Chandeliers 101. With their distinctive style, beauty, and quality, Murano chandeliers are truly a sight to behold. You are certain to be impressed by one of the oldest chandelier-making traditions in the world.
